Hey, I just watched it a few hours back. I've studied Midsummer too, as well as co-directing small portions of it for a middle school drama club. So I really do like it ^-^
And I thought this film was an excellent version of it! Talk about a star-studded cast:
Oberon - Rupert Everett
Titania - Michelle Pfeiffer
Puck - Stanley Tucci
Bottom - Kevin Kline
Hermia - (I actually don't recognize this person.)
Lysander - Dominic West
Demetrius - Christian Bale
Helena - Calista Flockhart
I especially enjoyed the performances of Calista Flockhart, who depicted poor Helena as sort of half-crazy with unrequited love, and Stanley Tucci was the PERFECT playful Puck. Dominic West made me laugh with his portrayal of Lysander too. I typically don't imagine Oberon as being as serious as Rupert Everett made him out to be, but it worked very well.
I also happen to really like the Players - Quince was very pert and funny. Flute became one of my favorite characters in this particular version of Midsummer....when he ditched the falsetto at the end of the Pyramus and Thisbe play, his acting really did get me. I actually didn't really care for Kline as Bottom....partially because his random American accent amongst all the British bugged the daylights out of me. And of course, my recognition of Gregory Jbara (Billy's dad from BETM on Broadway) as Snout excited me to no end!
Oh yeah. And Christian does VERY well in this as always C: Plus, he looks very very attractive. In the beginning scenes, I actually yelped out loud, "GEEZ! If I were Hermia, and he's Demetrius, I'd marry him right away!"
